To start the year off, students will complete a reading inventory so I can find out their interests. I will match each student with a good-fit book. I conference with each student weekly about the book they are reading. I will teach mini-lessons through the use of picture books to teach reading skills and strategies. My hope is for all students to read at least 20 minutes per day at home. I encourage you to have your children read aloud to you as well.
Reading and Writing will be individualized this year by using a research based writing and reading curriculum and will be implemented using a modified Daily Five model. Each students will work on writing, read to self, and word work through the use of stations.
The Spelling curriculum used this year is Words Their Way. This is a differentiated approach to learning spelling skills. Each week students will receive a word sort to complete at home along with completing words sorts and games for their wordlist. One test will be given each week. A new word list will be given on Friday to be used for the following week.
